Announcing the 2011 Oral Health Community Hero!

Please join us TOMORROW, February 8, 2011, to honor Dr. Ricardo Guevara for his outstanding work in improving the state of oral health in Massachusetts at the 6th Annual Oral Health Heroes Event.

Dr. Guevara is the Assistant Director of the dental department at Codman Square Health Center and Director of Dental Programs at the Dorchester High School School-Based Health Center. He has set up a school-based dental program to increase access to dental care among local youth.  Kids can go to the “dentist’s office” at school and get care right on campus. This increases the likelihood that the students will receive care since their parents won’t have to take them out of school, resulting in better care and more time in class.

School-based and school-linked oral health services are a proven strategy to improving access to oral health education, prevention and treatment services to children who are at high risk for oral disease. Preventive treatments include topical fluorides (fluoride mouth rinse and varnish) and dental sealants. Other services include health education, screenings, referrals, and case management to ensure delivery of oral health care from professionals in the community. The bottom line is this: SBHCs keep students in class and ready to learn.

Dr. Guevara, along with Legislative Oral Health Heroes Senator Thomas McGee and Representative Steve Walsh, will be honored at tomorrows Oral Health Heroes Event:
