Insurance Availability Update

In what will hopefully not become a recurring theme on our blog, we provide you with the weekly status update of private insurance availability for individuals and small businesses. As best we can tell:

  • The Health Connector is now selling insurance for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Celticare and Health New England. Tufts and Neighborhood Health Plan rates should be posted within a few days.
  • Insurance is available directly through the following carriers: Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Celticare, Health New England, Neighborhood Health Plan, Tufts, and United HealthCare.
  • The Division of Insurance has informed two carriers: Fallon Community Health Plan and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care that they are subject to fines, which could be significant for failing to certify rates appropriately.
  • The Superior Court ruled earlier in the week that the Carriers must go through the DOI’s administrative hearing prior to a Court ruling on the rate decisions. These hearings have been scheduled for next week at DOI.

Please use the comments if there are corrections or updates to this information.

HCFA appreciates those carriers that have complied with the state’s requirements despite ongoing concerns and uncertainty over the rates. But to us, it’s unacceptable for some carriers to refuse to allow the public access to coverage. We look forward to seeing all carriers open and ready for business in the coming days.
